私はアメリカ・カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスに生まれ、大学卒業まで韓国・ソウルで過ごしました。人文地理学と自然地理学の融合、そして学際的な研究に強い関心を持っています。
大学1年生の冬休みに初めて訪れた日本の繊細な文化に魅了され、その後日本語を学び始めました。2002年には日本政府（文部科学省）の国費留学生として来日し、筑波大学大学院生命環境科学研究科にて博士（理学）の学位を取得しました。
現在は、秀明大学および早稲田大学で地理学、自然地理学、地誌学などの講義を担当し、地理学の面白さと奥深さを伝えることに努めています。教育を通して学生が異文化を理解し、国際感覚を持つ人材へと成長できるよう貢献することを目標としています。
研究テーマは農業と水資源に関する問題で、特にカリフォルニア州における干ばつ・農業・山火事の相関関係に焦点を当てています。気候変動のみならず農業的要因からも山火事の根本原因を探り、将来に向けた具体的な対策を提案することを目指しています。
教育と研究の両面から、地理学の新たな可能性を開拓するとともに、学生や研究者が世界の課題に対して好奇心と科学的探究心を持って向き合えるよう、力を尽くしていきたいと考えています。
I was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in Seoul, South Korea, where I completed my undergraduate studies. My academic interests lie in bridging human and physical geography, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary research.
My first encounter with Japan was during a winter trip in my freshman year of university. I was deeply captivated by the country’s refined culture, which inspired me to begin studying the Japanese language. In 2002, I came to Japan as a recipient of the Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship and later earned my Ph.D. in Science from the Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Tsukuba.
Currently, I teach geography, physical geography, and regional studies at Shumei University and Waseda University. My teaching philosophy is to share the fascination and intellectual depth of geography, encouraging students to appreciate its value as a lens through which we can better understand our world. I am committed to fostering global-minded individuals who can embrace cultural diversity and contribute meaningfully to international society.
My current research focuses on the intersection of agriculture and water issues, with a particular emphasis on California’s droughts, agriculture, and their correlation with wildfires. Beyond the lens of climate change, I explore the agricultural dimensions of wildfire occurrence, seeking to identify root causes and propose effective strategies for future mitigation.
Through both teaching and research, my goal is to advance knowledge in geography while inspiring students and colleagues to approach global challenges with curiosity, empathy, and scientific rigor.
저는 미국 캘리포니아주 로스앤젤레스에서 태어나, 대학까지 한국 서울에서 성장했습니다. 연구 관심사는 인문지리학과 자연지리학의 융합, 그리고 학문 간 경계를 넘나드는 학제적 연구에 있습니다.
대학 1학년 겨울방학에 처음 일본을 여행했을 때, 그 섬세한 문화에 깊은 매력을 느꼈습니다. 이를 계기로 일본어를 배우기 시작했고, 2002년 일본정부 문부과학성 국비유학생으로 선발되어 일본에 건너와, 이후 츠쿠바대학교 대학원 생명환경과학연구과에서 박사(이학) 학위를 취득했습니다.
현재는 슈메이대학교와 와세다대학교에서 지리학, 자연지리학, 지리학적 지역 연구 등을 강의하며, 지리학의 흥미와 가치를 학생들에게 전달하기 위해 힘쓰고 있습니다. 교육자로서 학생들이 지리학을 통해 세계를 다각도로 이해하고, 나아가 국제적 감각을 갖춘 인재로 성장할 수 있도록 돕는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다.
제 연구의 중심 주제는 농업과 물 문제이며, 특히 캘리포니아주에서의 가뭄과 농업, 그리고 산불과의 상관관계를 탐구하고 있습니다. 기후 변화 요인뿐만 아니라 농업적 요인에 주목하여 산불의 근본 원인을 분석하고, 향후 효과적인 대응 방안을 제시하는 것을 목표로 삼고 있습니다.
저는 앞으로도 교육과 연구를 통해 지리학의 새로운 가능성을 넓히고, 학생과 연구자들이 세계의 다양한 과제를 과학적 탐구심과 열린 시각으로 바라볼 수 있도록 기여하고자 합니다.
